Shania Banton is a NY native "Zillennial" storytelling powerhouse, whose passion has allowed her to build her career as a Director, Writer, and Producer in TV, Film, Digital, and Commercial. Raised in the heart and most diverse area of NYC, Queens, her Jamaican upbringing showed her there was more than one way of living, she wasn't just Black American, she had a different culture with different traditions and outlooks on life. Her New York playground provided her with limitless vision on how things can look and be done. Shania Banton has been featured in multiple film festivals for her work as a Director, Writer, and Producer. From the first time she began writing short stories, she always gravitated towards evoking dramatic emotions through her work and a passion for keeping the Black American and Caribbean American culture alive. Starting out as a writer and actress studying at the Susan Batson Studio in NYC Shania developed her first web series "WAVES" which follows a pair of sisters, Nia and Jean, as they work to repair their estranged relationship when Jean decides to move in with Nia, while also withholding a bombshell of a secret that could ruin their relationship. The series completed two seasons and went on to be featured in Spike Lee's documentary "Da Republic of Brooklyn" and was #1 rated on the streaming service KweliTV, for over two years. It is now streaming on both Kweli TV and Amazon Prime. Shania continued to work on her independent projects under her company Just Shania LLC. Directing, producing, and writing projects such as "I Wear Black" - a half hour comedy pilot that was a finalist in Stareable Film Festivals HBO Pitch Competition. "Switch" - a one woman production short film now streaming on Amazon Prime. "145-Days" - an independent dramatic short following a young couple as they're locked in during the COVID-19 pandemic and the toll that it takes on their relationship. "D-Date" - an unscripted reality dating series purchased by media company Blacktag and many, many more. Following the success of her work, Shania has gone on to direct and produce for many companies which include HBO, NETFLIX, MTV, 40 Acres and a Mule Films, Barclay Center, Blacktag, Squarespace, Fiverr and more. Through her experience, Shania has been able to craft and develop her directorial style into one where the priority is to lead with community and compassion for all bodies on set. Her specific and intentional direction, positive energy and outward respect for the process of filmmaking inspires everyone to leave the set excited about the art they just made. Shania Twain was born as Eilleen Regina Edwards in 1965 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, one of three daughters of Clarence and Sharon (Morrison) Edwards (sister Jill is two years older and Carrie-Ann three years younger). When she was age six, her mother remarried Jerry Twain, a full-blooded Ojibwa native from Timmins, Ontario, who adopted her as his own. She started out singing in bars as a child after hours, and, at thirteen, appeared on The Tommy Hunter Show (1965). When she was 22, her parents were killed in an accident, and she became the legal guardian of her half-brothers (Mark, then 13, and Darryl, then 14) and sister, putting her musical career on hold to raise her family. In 1991 she changed her name to Shania (meaning "I'm on my way" in Ojibwa, it was the name of a co-worker), and signed a contract with Mercury Nashville that same year. Her first album went by without notice, but her second album (produced with Mutt Lange, who she wed in 1993) broke world records with its sales!
